Introduction

Technological advancements and growing demands at workplace lead to the needs for corresponding changes in the skills and abilities of employees. And one of the ways to bring this change is Training.

To ensure the effectiveness of training and development programs it is important to know what exactly is required to be developed and who needs the development. This helps organizations in concentrating on channelizing the resources where they will contribute the most to employee development, enhancing morale and organizational performance. Simply throwing training at individuals may miss priority needs, or even cover areas that are not essential.

A Training Needs Analysis (TNA) is an analysis of the training, learning and development needs of the employees in an organization. It considers the skills, knowledge, and behaviors of the people in the organization and search for the ways and means of how to develop them, both to deliver the organization’s strategic objectives and support the individual’s career progression. A Training Needs Analysis should ideally be taken at three levels (a) Organizational (b) Team (c) Individual

Effective TNA involves systematic planning, analysis and coordination across the organization to ensure that organizational priorities are taken into account, that duplication of effort is avoided and economies of scale are achieved. All potential trainees should be included in the process, rather than rely on the subjective evaluation of managers.
